Is lentil soup more climate-friendly than scrambled eggs with fried potatoes and spinach? An interactive calculator shows you how much CO₂ your dish is generating. You can enter your own recipe or view examples.

You will then also be assessed whether the dish is more climate-friendly or more harmful. It is important to note that this assessment does not take into account emissions only. It also takes into account how much food contains in our daily nutrient requirements. For example, it is considered not only in terms of fat, protein, but also in terms of nutritional weight. Dishes that make up a large part of our needs are judged to be more climate-friendly than those that contribute little. Therefore, dishes with the same CO₂ value may be evaluated differently. Also, portions are standardized so that very nutritious food or too large portions are automatically no more harmful to the climate.

Eaternity’s team opted for this method. Because otherwise the “climate-harmful” consequences will always be visible to those who eat more. And normalize the nutritional value to avoid misclassifying dishes with high mass but little nutritional value.

What does the calculator show?

This calculator sums up the CO₂ emissions of individual foods and shows the amount of CO₂ produced per serving per plate. On the right is a description of which component and how much of it on the balance sheet. The calculator shows how climate-friendly a dish is in terms of nutrient content, portion or calorie content of the food. It may vary by grade. The climate compatibility of a meal can best be assessed with the help of nutrients.

So, with just a few changes, we can see how we can make our food more climate-friendly. Substituting a single ingredient or using less is sufficient to significantly improve the CO₂ balance. You can enter your favorite dishes into the calculator and see which ingredients are most important to you.

From Farmers to Forks to Garbage Incinerators: What Makes Up the CO₂ Value of a Plate?

CO₂ emissions occur as food moves from the field, through the factory, and wholesale to the plate. All of these steps produce emissions. Disposal of leftovers and packaging also causes emissions. The calculator takes this into account too. However, it does not include emissions for packaging, transport in supermarket homes, and electricity consumption for cooking. The data comes from “Eaternity AG”, a Swiss company that advises restaurant owners and businesses on how to calculate their ecological footprint.

How is the average dish calculated on the basis of the rating?

Eatenity measured the carbon footprint of 76,034 dishes and calculated that an average of 3994 grams of CO₂ per day was consumed to meet the daily needs of nutrients. Compare the calculator’s dishes to this value. We rate climate-friendly dishes that generate less CO₂ than similar average dishes to cover a similar portion of our nutritional needs.

Despite similar CO2 emissions, the evaluation of certain foods differs depending on whether they are compared on a nutrient basis or a calorie basis. Foods that provide many important nutrients tend to be rated as more climate friendly. Of course, vice versa. Meals that generate less than half or more than double the amount of CO₂ are classified as very good or very bad in terms of nutritional value. When comparing the climate by part and calorie, it shows only the difference from the average food.

What is the actual equivalent of CO₂?

The CO₂ equivalent is a unit that makes it easier to classify whether a food is good for the climate or not. This is because the production of some foods releases methane as well as CO₂. This is another greenhouse gas that is also harmful to the climate. However, methane is not included when calculating CO₂ emissions only. Then the balance sheet will improve.

The calculator takes this into account by not only displaying your CO₂ emissions, but also displaying the so-called “CO₂ equivalents”. Emissions of methane gas are converted into CO₂ emissions using scientific methods. This is the only way foods can compare to each other in terms of their climate footprint.

Seasonality, Packaging and Cooking CO₂ Consumption: What Calculators Don’t Consider

The values ​​displayed on the calculator are intended to provide direction. But they definitely aren’t. Because these are averages – it may be much better in summer than in winter, for example because the balance sheet of food is not imported or is aged in the sun. heated greenhouse. The value on the calculator shows the average balance of food. The average of tomatoes ripened in the sun in Brandenburg and winter tomatoes in a heated greenhouse is calculated. In individual cases, the climate balance may be much better or worse than what computers show.

Even buying food unwrapped instead of on plastic trays improves your balance sheet. But it happens only slightly. Because most of the emissions come from agricultural production in the first place. The tool also doesn’t count how much gas or electricity is used when cooking.

Of course, it’s not just one meal that counts when it comes to climate protection. However, sheep and feeding behavior over a long period of time.
